Wash your hands thoroughly
Gather a clean enema kit, lubricant, towel, and access to a bathroom
Read the product instructions carefully before use
Use only the type and amount of solution directed on the package or by a clinician
Check the solution temperature if instructed, making sure it is not hot
Lie on your left side with your right knee bent, or use the position directed by the instructions
Apply lubricant to the tip of the enema nozzle
Insert the nozzle gently into the rectum only as far as directed
Slowly squeeze or release the solution into the rectum as instructed
Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or significant discomfort
Remove the nozzle carefully after the solution is administered
Try to retain the solution for the recommended time if instructed
Go to the toilet when you need to pass stool
Clean the area, wash your hands, and clean or discard the equipment as directed
Do not use an enema more often than recommended
Do not use an enema if you have severe abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or a bowel obstruction unless a clinician tells you to
