Wear safety glasses and secure the metal in a vise or with clamps
Mark the drilling spot with a center punch
Choose a sharp drill bit made for metal
Use a smaller pilot bit first if drilling a large hole
Apply cutting oil to the drilling area
Set the drill to a low speed
Hold the drill straight and steady
Start drilling with light pressure
Increase pressure gradually as the bit bites
Stop occasionally to clear chips and reapply cutting oil
Reduce speed and pressure as the bit breaks through
Deburr the hole after drilling
Clean the metal and drill bit after use
