Rest the arm and avoid activities that worsen the pain
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day for the first 48 hours
Use heat after the first 48 hours if stiffness or muscle tightness is present
Keep the arm elevated when possible
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Gently stretch and move the arm if pain allows
Use a compression wrap if swelling is present
Massage the area lightly if it does not increase pain
Improve posture and avoid prolonged repetitive motions
Support the arm with a pillow while resting or sleeping
Stop any activity that causes sharp or worsening pain
Seek medical care if pain is severe, persistent, or follows an injury
Seek urgent care if there is chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, weakness, or swelling with redness or warmth
