Consult a veterinarian or trained groomer before attempting anal gland expression
Wear disposable gloves
Gather lubricant, paper towels, and a waste bag
Position the pet safely and calmly
Lift the tail gently
Locate the anal glands at about the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions around the anus
Place a paper towel over the area
Apply gentle pressure inward and upward on both glands at the same time
Allow the fluid to drain onto the towel
Stop if the pet shows pain, swelling, bleeding, or severe discomfort
Clean the area thoroughly after expression
Dispose of used materials properly
Wash hands and disinfect the area
Seek veterinary care if the glands are impacted, infected, or repeatedly need expression
