Consult a veterinarian or licensed groomer before attempting anal gland expression
Wear disposable gloves
Gather paper towels, lubricant, and warm water or pet-safe wipes
Have the dog stand or lie still in a safe, calm area
Lift the tail gently
Apply a small amount of lubricant to a gloved finger
Locate the anal glands at about the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions around the anus
Place a paper towel over the area
Gently press the glands inward and upward toward the anus
Stop if the dog shows pain, bleeding, or severe discomfort
Clean the area with warm water or pet-safe wipes
Wash hands and disinfect the area and supplies
Seek veterinary care if the glands are swollen, infected, impacted, or repeatedly need draining
