Clear loose drywall, dust, and debris from the hole
Cut the hole into a neat square or rectangle if needed
Measure the opening
Cut a drywall patch to fit the opening
Add backing strips behind the hole if the opening is larger than a small dent
Secure the backing strips with screws
Attach the drywall patch to the backing strips
Apply drywall tape over the seams
Cover the seams with joint compound
Let the compound dry completely
Apply additional thin coats of joint compound as needed
Sand the patched area smooth
Wipe away dust
Prime the repaired area
Paint to match the wall
