Turn the gas control knob to the OFF position
Wait at least 5 minutes to clear any gas
Check for any gas smell before proceeding
Set the gas control knob to PILOT
Press and hold the control knob down
Use the igniter button or a long lighter to light the pilot
Keep holding the control knob down for 30 to 60 seconds after the pilot lights
Release the control knob slowly
If the pilot stays lit, turn the knob to ON
If the pilot goes out, repeat the lighting steps
If you smell gas, stop and call a qualified technician
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the water heater label
Do not force any controls
Do not relight if the area is filled with gas
