Stop activity immediately
Rest the ankle
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time
Repeat icing every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Compress the ankle with an elastic bandage
Elevate the ankle above heart level
Avoid putting weight on the ankle if it hurts
Use crutches if needed
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate
Keep the ankle supported with a brace if needed
Begin gentle movement once pain and swelling improve
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight
Seek medical care if swelling or pain is severe
Seek medical care if the ankle looks deformed
Seek medical care if numbness or tingling occurs
Seek medical care if symptoms do not improve within a few days
