Turn off the shower and let the water drain
Place a towel or rag around the shower arm or shower head to protect the finish
Grip the shower head by hand and turn it counterclockwise
If it is stuck, use an adjustable wrench or pliers with a cloth for grip and protection
Hold the shower arm steady with a second wrench or by hand to avoid twisting the pipe
Apply steady pressure rather than jerking
If needed, spray penetrating oil on the threads and wait a few minutes
Continue turning counterclockwise until the shower head comes off
Remove any old plumber’s tape or residue from the threads
Inspect the threads before installing a new shower head or cap
