Locate the shutoff valve behind the toilet near the wall or floor
Turn the valve clockwise until it stops
If the valve is stuck, use gentle pressure with a towel or pliers
Flush the toilet to drain the tank and stop water flow
If there is no local valve, turn off the main water supply to the home
Check that water has stopped entering the tank
Call a plumber if the valve will not close or leaks continue
