Rest and stay hydrated
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and pain if appropriate
Avoid aspirin in children
Eat soft, bland foods if mouth sores make swallowing painful
Avoid acidic, spicy, or salty foods
Use cold fluids, popsicles, or ice chips to soothe mouth pain
Wash hands often with soap and water
Disinfect shared surfaces and toys
Avoid close contact with others while contagious
Keep children home from school or daycare until fever is gone and they feel better
Keep skin blisters clean and dry
Do not pop blisters
Seek medical care if symptoms are severe, dehydration occurs, or breathing/swallowing becomes difficult
