Drink plenty of fluids (water, oral rehydration solution, broth)
Take oral rehydration solution if available
Eat bland foods (rice, bananas, toast, oatmeal, potatoes, soup)
Avoid dairy, greasy foods, spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine
Avoid sugary drinks and fruit juices
Stay hydrated with small frequent sips if nauseated
Consider probiotics (yogurt with live cultures or probiotic supplements)
Use loperamide only if there is no fever and no blood/mucus in stool
Consider bismuth subsalicylate if appropriate for you
Wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before eating
Do not share towels or utensils
Seek medical care urgently if any of the following occur:
Blood in stool or black/tarry stool
High fever
Severe or worsening abdominal pain
Signs of dehydration (very dry mouth, dizziness, minimal urination, extreme weakness)
Diarrhea lasting more than 2 days in adults (or more than 24 hours in children)
Recent antibiotic use or suspected food poisoning with severe symptoms
Pregnancy, immunocompromised status, or significant chronic illness
For children, use an oral rehydration solution and contact a clinician if symptoms are severe or prolonged
