Drink warm liquids (tea, broth) frequently
Gargle warm salt water (1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water) several times a day
Use throat lozenges or hard candy to keep the throat moist
Take honey (1–2 teaspoons) as needed, especially before bed
Use warm steam or a humidifier to add moisture to the air
Stay hydrated; avoid alcohol and smoking
Rest your voice; avoid whispering
Use over-the-counter pain relief such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed
Use OTC throat sprays that numb the throat (follow package directions)
Avoid irritants: smoke, vaping, very dry air, strong fumes
Replace your toothbrush after you’ve been sick for a few days to reduce reinfection risk
Get tested and seek care promptly if you might have strep throat (fever, no cough, swollen tender neck glands, white patches)
Seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing, drooling, inability to swallow liquids, severe one-sided throat pain, muffled “hot potato” voice, stiff neck, or worsening symptoms
See a clinician if symptoms last more than 3–5 days, are severe, or keep recurring
