Wash and dry clothing and bedding on hot settings
Take infested clothes off promptly and seal them in a bag until washing
Shower immediately after being outdoors
Thoroughly wash skin with soap and water
Use a chigger repellent on skin before going outdoors (follow label directions)
Treat clothing and gear with a repellent labeled for fabric or use permethrin-treated clothing (follow label directions)
Avoid tall grass, brush, and leaf litter; stay on cleared paths
Mow lawns regularly and remove weeds and overgrown vegetation
Clear leaf litter and debris; rake and dispose of grass clippings
Reduce outdoor clutter where chiggers can live (wood piles, stones, dense ground cover)
Keep pets from resting in heavily infested areas
Use outdoor yard treatments only if needed and follow label directions for chigger control
If bites itch: apply hydrocortisone 1% cream to affected areas
Use calamine lotion for itch relief
Take an oral antihistamine for itching (follow label directions)
Avoid scratching; keep nails short and clean
If skin becomes infected (increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever), seek medical care
