Hold your breath for 10–20 seconds, then breathe normally; repeat 2–3 times
Drink cold water slowly without stopping
Gargle with cold water for 20–30 seconds, then repeat
Sip water continuously for 30–60 seconds
Swallow 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar, then swallow again with water if needed
Try a teaspoon of honey or peanut butter, then swallow
Breathe slowly into a paper bag for 1–2 minutes (do not do if you have breathing problems)
Pull your knees to your chest and hold for 30 seconds, then relax
Practice slow diaphragmatic breathing: inhale through the nose for 5 seconds, exhale for 5–7 seconds for 1–2 minutes
Eat a small amount of something dry (e.g., bread or crackers) and swallow slowly
Avoid carbonated drinks, alcohol, very hot or spicy foods, and eating too quickly; eat smaller meals
If hiccups last more than 48 hours or are severe/recurrent, seek medical care
