Saline nasal spray
Saline rinse (neti pot or squeeze bottle) with sterile/distilled or previously boiled water
Steam inhalation (hot shower or bowl of steam)
Warm compress over the nose and cheeks
Stay hydrated (water, warm tea)
Use a humidifier
Sleep with head elevated
Gentle nose blowing (avoid excessive force)
Lightly massage the sides of the nose and under-eye area
Avoid smoke and strong odors
Use a cool-mist humidifier if air is dry
If allergies: use an antihistamine (follow label directions)
If allergies: consider an intranasal steroid spray (follow label directions; may take a few days)
If severe congestion: use a decongestant nasal spray for up to 3 days (follow label directions)
If severe congestion: consider an oral decongestant (follow label directions; avoid if you have certain conditions)
Check for medication side effects that can worsen congestion
Seek medical care urgently for trouble breathing, severe facial pain/swelling, high fever, or symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement
Seek medical care if you have recurrent sinus infections, bloody discharge, or worsening symptoms after initial improvement
