Cool the tar with cold water or an ice pack wrapped in cloth
Gently soften the tar with mineral oil, baby oil, petroleum jelly, or olive oil
Wipe away loosened tar with a soft cloth or cotton pad
Wash the skin with soap and warm water
Repeat the oil-and-wipe process if needed
Do not pull or scrape tar off forcefully
Do not use gasoline, paint thinner, or harsh solvents on skin
Seek medical help if tar covers a large area, causes burns, or gets in the eyes or mouth
