Blot up as much urine as possible with paper towels or a clean cloth
Press firmly to absorb moisture; do not rub
Rinse the area lightly with cool water
Blot again to remove the water
Apply an enzymatic pet urine cleaner to the affected area
Let the cleaner sit for the time listed on the label
Blot or air-dry the area completely
Sprinkle baking soda over the dry area
Let the baking soda sit for several hours or overnight
Vacuum up the baking soda
Repeat the enzyme treatment if the smell remains
Use a wet-dry vacuum if the carpet is heavily soaked
Clean the carpet padding if the urine has soaked through
Replace the carpet pad if the odor persists
Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners
Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first
