Ask your veterinarian if the pill can be given with food or must be given on an empty stomach
Wash your hands
Have a treat ready
Calm your dog and position them securely
Open your dog’s mouth gently
Place the pill as far back on the tongue as safely possible
Close your dog’s mouth
Hold the mouth closed and gently rub the throat or blow lightly on the nose
Wait for swallowing
Give a treat or small amount of food immediately after
Check that the pill was swallowed
Use a pill pocket, cheese, or a small amount of soft food if allowed
Use a pill splitter or crusher only if your veterinarian says it is safe
Use a pill gun or piller if needed
Contact your veterinarian if your dog spits out the pill or refuses medication
