Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Plant garlic in fall, about 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes
Separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves
Select the largest, healthiest cloves for planting
Plant cloves pointed end up, 2 inches deep
Space cloves 4–6 inches apart
Space rows 12–18 inches apart
Cover cloves with soil and water lightly
Add mulch to protect plants and retain moisture
Keep soil evenly moist, not waterlogged
Remove weeds regularly
Fertilize lightly in early spring if needed
Cut off flower stalks when they appear
Harvest when lower leaves turn brown and tops begin to dry
Lift bulbs carefully from the soil
Cure garlic in a dry, airy place for 2–4 weeks
Store cured garlic in a cool, dry, dark place
