How to Grow Oats?

Choose a cool-season location with full sun and well-drained soil

Test the soil and adjust pH to about 6.0 to 7.0 if needed

Prepare the seedbed by removing weeds and loosening the soil

Sow oat seed directly in early spring or fall, depending on climate

Broadcast or drill seed about 1 to 1.5 inches deep

Space rows about 6 to 7 inches apart if planting in rows

Cover seeds lightly with soil and firm the seedbed

Water after planting to keep soil evenly moist until germination

Thin or weed the crop early to reduce competition

Apply nitrogen fertilizer if soil test or growth indicates need

Keep the crop watered during dry periods, especially while establishing

Monitor for pests, diseases, and lodging

Harvest when seed heads turn golden and grains are firm

Cut, dry, and thresh the oats after harvest

Store cleaned oats in a cool, dry place
