Apply a cold compress or wrapped ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, every 1 to 2 hours, for the first 24 to 48 hours
Keep your head elevated, especially when lying down
Use acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen for the first 24 hours if possible
After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day
Rest and avoid strenuous activity
Do not rub or press on the eye
Avoid contact lenses until the area feels better
Protect the area from further injury
Seek urgent medical care if you have vision changes, severe pain, blood in the eye, trouble moving the eye, worsening swelling, or a possible fracture
