Wash your hands before touching the blister
Clean the area gently with soap and water
Leave the blister intact if possible
Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes
Cover it with a sterile, nonstick bandage
Use a blister pad or hydrocolloid dressing
Keep pressure and friction off the area
Wear loose, comfortable footwear or clothing
Elevate the area if it is on a foot or hand
Change the dressing daily or if it gets wet or dirty
If the blister breaks, clean it gently and apply antibiotic ointment if needed
Do not peel off the loose skin unless it is dirty or torn
Avoid popping the blister
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
Watch for redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or worsening pain
Seek medical care if signs of infection appear or if you have diabetes or poor circulation
