How To Install Hardwood Flooring?

Acclimate the hardwood flooring in the room for the manufacturer-recommended time

Check the subfloor for levelness, dryness, and structural soundness

Remove baseboards, shoe molding, and existing flooring if needed

Clean the subfloor thoroughly

Install a moisture barrier or underlayment if required

Plan the layout and determine the starting wall

Measure the room and snap chalk lines for alignment

Cut door casings and trim so flooring can slide underneath

Lay the first row with the tongue or groove facing the correct direction

Leave the required expansion gap around the perimeter

Secure the first row according to the flooring type

Stagger end joints between rows

Continue installing boards row by row

Use a tapping block and pull bar to tighten joints

Cut boards to fit around obstacles and at row ends

Install the final row with the proper expansion gap

Reinstall baseboards and trim without pinning the floor

Fill nail holes or touch up as needed

Clean the floor and follow the manufacturer’s curing or use instructions
