Keep the cat and dog separated at first
Let them get used to each other’s scent by swapping bedding or toys
Feed them on opposite sides of a closed door
Use a baby gate or cracked door for visual contact
Keep the dog on a leash during first face-to-face meetings
Allow the cat to approach at its own pace
Reward calm behavior from both animals
Keep initial meetings short and supervised
Give the cat high places and escape routes
Stop the interaction if either animal shows stress or aggression
Repeat short, positive sessions over several days or weeks
Never force contact between them
Maintain separate safe spaces for both pets
Be patient and consistent throughout the process
