Drink water or other zero-calorie fluids
Take a short walk or light activity (if you’re not sick and your blood sugar is not extremely high)
Follow your prescribed rapid-acting insulin or diabetes medication plan
If you use correction insulin, use the dose recommended by your clinician or your written sick-day/correction plan
Eat a small snack with protein and/or fiber if you’re hungry (avoid sugary carbs)
Avoid sugary drinks, juice, soda, and sweets
Avoid large meals and high-carbohydrate foods
Check blood sugar again in 15–30 minutes (or per your plan)
Check ketones if you have type 1 diabetes, are pregnant, or your glucose is very high; follow your ketone instructions
If you feel unwell, have vomiting, severe dehydration, confusion, trouble breathing, or ketones are positive, seek urgent medical care
If glucose remains high after following your plan, contact your diabetes care team or urgent care for guidance
