How To Lower Blood Sugar Fast?

Drink water or other zero-calorie fluids

Take a short walk or light activity (if you’re not sick and your blood sugar is not extremely high)

Follow your prescribed rapid-acting insulin or diabetes medication plan

If you use correction insulin, use the dose recommended by your clinician or your written sick-day/correction plan

Eat a small snack with protein and/or fiber if you’re hungry (avoid sugary carbs)

Avoid sugary drinks, juice, soda, and sweets

Avoid large meals and high-carbohydrate foods

Check blood sugar again in 15–30 minutes (or per your plan)

Check ketones if you have type 1 diabetes, are pregnant, or your glucose is very high; follow your ketone instructions

If you feel unwell, have vomiting, severe dehydration, confusion, trouble breathing, or ketones are positive, seek urgent medical care

If glucose remains high after following your plan, contact your diabetes care team or urgent care for guidance
