Peel the kumara
Cut it into even chunks
Place the chunks in a pot
Cover with cold water
Add a pinch of salt
Bring to a boil
Reduce to a simmer
Cook until very tender
Drain the water
Return the kumara to the pot
Mash with a potato masher or fork
Add butter
Add milk or cream
Season with salt and pepper
Mix until smooth or chunky as desired
Serve warm
