Peel and cut potatoes into chunks
Place potatoes in a pot
Cover with cold water
Add salt
Bring to a boil
Cook until potatoes are tender
Drain the potatoes
Return potatoes to the pot
Add butter
Add warm milk or cream
Mash until smooth
Season with salt and pepper
Serve warm
