How To Make Soap?

Gather materials: soap base (melt-and-pour) or oils + lye, distilled water, thermometer, digital scale, heat-safe container, silicone molds, immersion blender (for cold process), stirring utensils, safety gear

For melt-and-pour: cut or grate soap base, add to heat-safe container

Melt soap base using microwave in short bursts or a double boiler until fully liquid

Cool melted soap base to about 110–130°F (43–54°C)

Add fragrance and/or essential oil (typical: 0.5–3% by weight) and mix thoroughly

Add colorant (melt-safe soap dye) and mix thoroughly

Add optional additives (exfoliants, botanicals, mica) and mix thoroughly

Remove bubbles by lightly misting with rubbing alcohol or briefly spritzing with alcohol

Pour into molds

Optional: spritz alcohol again to reduce bubbles

Let soap set until fully hardened (typically 30–60 minutes)

Unmold soap

Cure/store as needed (melt-and-pour typically ready immediately)

For cold process (lye-based): calculate formulation using a lye calculator (target oils, desired hardness/cleansing, superfat, and water discount)

Weigh oils and lye precisely using a digital scale

Dissolve lye in distilled water in a well-ventilated area; stir until fully dissolved

Cool both lye solution and oils to roughly 95–110°F (35–43°C)

Combine lye solution into oils and blend to trace (light custard consistency)

Add fragrance/essential oils and mix

Pour into molds

Insulate molds (wrap or box) for 24–48 hours

Unmold and cut into bars

Cure 4–6 weeks in a cool, dry, ventilated area

Label and store cured bars

Safety steps for lye-based soap: wear gloves, eye protection, long sleeves, and work in ventilation

Keep lye off skin and clothing; add lye to water, not water to lye

Clean tools and surfaces after use and dispose of waste safely
