Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil

Remove weeds, rocks, and debris from the planting area
Work compost or aged manure into the soil
Dig a hole wide enough for the roots and deep enough to keep the crown level with the soil surface
Space plants according to the variety and growth habit
Place the plant in the hole and spread the roots out
Backfill with soil and firm it gently around the roots
Water thoroughly after planting
Apply mulch around the plants, keeping it away from the crown
Install a trellis or support system if needed
Prune canes if recommended for the variety
Water regularly during the first growing season
Keep the area free of weeds
Fertilize lightly after new growth begins, if needed
