How To Plant Peonies?

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil

Plant peonies in fall for best results

Loosen the soil to a depth of 12 to 18 inches

Mix in compost or well-rotted organic matter

Dig a hole wide enough for the roots

Place the peony roots with the eyes facing upward

Set the eyes no more than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface

Backfill the hole and gently firm the soil

Water thoroughly after planting

Space plants 3 to 4 feet apart

Mulch lightly without covering the crown too deeply

Avoid planting too deep

Keep the soil evenly moist until established

Remove mulch in spring if it is too heavy

Do not expect blooms the first year

Cut back foliage after frost in fall
