Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil
Prepare the soil by loosening it and mixing in compost
Select seed potatoes (chitted if desired)
Cut seed potatoes into pieces with at least one eye per piece (if cutting), then let cut surfaces dry
Space seed pieces 12–15 inches apart in rows
Plant seed pieces 4–6 inches deep
Cover with soil, then water lightly after planting
Mulch with straw or leaves once sprouts emerge
Add more soil or mulch gradually as plants grow (“hill” the potatoes)
Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist, especially during tuber formation
Fertilize as needed based on soil test or with balanced fertilizer
Keep weeds down by hand weeding or mulching
Watch for pests and diseases; remove affected plants and treat as needed
Stop watering when foliage starts to yellow and die back
Harvest when plants mature (typically 90–120 days depending on variety)
Dig carefully to avoid damaging tubers
Cure harvested potatoes by keeping them in a cool, dark, ventilated area for about 1–2 weeks
Store in a dark, cool, humid environment (avoid freezing and sunlight)
