Take your time and let the stool pass naturally
Keep the toilet seat position comfortable and stable
If needed, support yourself by holding the sides of the seat
Use a small amount of petroleum jelly around the anus if approved by your doctor
Take a warm sitz bath before trying to poop if pain is severe
Drink plenty of water throughout the day
Eat more fiber to keep stools soft
Avoid delaying the urge to poop
Use stool softeners only if recommended by a clinician
Wipe gently with soft toilet paper or use moist wipes without alcohol or fragrance
Pat dry instead of rubbing
