Sort out any debris or damaged beans
Soak the beans in water overnight or use a quick-soak method
Drain and rinse the soaked beans
Place the beans in a pot and cover with fresh water or broth
Add salt, onion, garlic, bay leaf, or other seasonings if desired
Bring to a boil
Reduce to a simmer
Cook until tender, stirring occasionally and adding water if needed
Drain if necessary
