Identify the raspberry type: summer-bearing or everbearing/fall-bearing
Use clean, sharp pruning shears
Remove all dead, damaged, diseased, or weak canes at ground level
Thin crowded canes so only the strongest remain
For summer-bearing raspberries, cut out canes that fruited this year at ground level after harvest
Keep the current year’s new canes for next year’s crop
For everbearing/fall-bearing raspberries, cut all canes to ground level in late winter for one fall crop
For a two-crop system, remove only the top portion of canes that fruited in fall and leave the lower part for summer fruit
Remove suckers growing too far from the row
Keep canes spaced evenly for airflow and access
Dispose of pruned canes to reduce disease spread
Prune annually
Wear gloves and long sleeves when pruning
