Check the medication label or package insert for “do not crush,” “do not split,” or “do not chew”
Ask a pharmacist or prescriber before crushing any pill if you are unsure
Wash your hands and use a clean, dry surface
Place the pill in a pill crusher, mortar and pestle, or between two clean spoons
Crush the pill into a fine powder
Mix the powder with a small amount of soft food or liquid if directed
Take the full dose right away
Clean the crushing device thoroughly after use
Do not crush extended-release, delayed-release, enteric-coated, or hazardous medications unless instructed by a professional
