Let the fire burn down to ash if possible
Spread out the embers with a stick
Slowly pour water over the fire
Stir the ashes and embers with a shovel or stick
Pour more water on any remaining hot spots
Repeat until there is no steam, heat, or glowing embers
Feel for heat from a safe distance with the back of your hand
Add dirt or sand only if water is unavailable
Stir again and recheck for heat
Leave the site only when everything is cold to the touch
