Turn off the water supply
Flush the toilet to empty the tank
Disconnect the water supply line
Remove the toilet bolts caps
Unscrew the closet bolts
Rock the toilet gently to break the seal
Lift the toilet straight up and set it aside
Scrape off the old wax ring from the flange and toilet horn
Check that the flange is clean, level, and secure
Place the new wax ring on the toilet horn or on the flange
Align the toilet bowl over the closet bolts
Lower the toilet straight down onto the wax ring
Press down evenly to compress the wax ring
Tighten the closet nuts evenly
Reconnect the water supply line
Turn the water supply back on
Flush the toilet and check for leaks
Install the bolt caps
Caulk around the base if desired, leaving a gap at the back
