Let the needle stop moving
Find the north-seeking end of the needle
Turn your body until the needle aligns with north on the compass
Read the direction-of-travel arrow
Read the degree markings on the bezel
Identify the bearing where the direction-of-travel arrow points
Use the orienting arrow and orienting lines to line up with north
Keep the compass level while moving
Recheck the needle often to stay on course
