Sit quietly and rest for 5–10 minutes
Recheck your blood pressure
Take prescribed blood pressure medicine exactly as directed
If you missed a dose, take it only if your doctor has told you to do so
Slow your breathing: inhale 4 seconds, exhale 6 seconds for 5 minutes
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and recreational drugs
Drink water if you may be dehydrated
Loosen tight clothing
Avoid exercise or heavy activity until your blood pressure is lower
Reduce salt intake immediately
Eat a light, low-sodium meal if you have not eaten
If your blood pressure is 180/120 or higher, seek urgent medical care
If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, weakness, confusion, or vision changes, call emergency services immediately
