Apply a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth for 10–15 minutes at a time
Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing
Avoid scented soaps, bubble baths, douches, and fragranced products
Rinse the area with lukewarm water and pat dry gently
Avoid scratching, rubbing, or shaving the area until swelling improves
Use a sitz bath with plain lukewarm water for short periods
Avoid sex and tampon use until the swelling goes down
Stay hydrated and rest
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you can safely use it
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, sudden, very painful, recurring, or lasts more than a few days
Seek urgent care if you have fever, pus, blisters, trouble urinating, or a new lump
