Soak the foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Gently lift the nail edge with clean dental floss or a small piece of cotton if it can be done without pain
Keep the toe clean and dry between soaks
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if recommended by a healthcare professional
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear to reduce pressure on the toe
Trim toenails straight across, not too short
Do not cut into the corners of the nail
Do not dig under the nail or try to cut it out yourself
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
See a podiatrist for safe removal if the ingrown nail is persistent, recurrent, or infected
