Shift the chain onto the smallest rear cog and smallest front chainring
Locate the master link, if your chain has one
Use master link pliers or your fingers to disconnect the master link
If there is no master link, position the chain tool on a pin
Turn the chain tool to push the pin out until the chain separates
Lift the chain off the chainrings and cassette
Remove the chain from the derailleur pulleys
Pull the chain free from the bike
If needed, keep the chain ends together to prevent it from falling into the frame or drivetrain
