How to Repair a Garbage Disposal?

Turn off the power to the garbage disposal at the switch and circuit breaker

Check for a tripped reset button on the bottom of the unit and press it

Look inside the disposal with a flashlight and remove any visible debris with tongs or pliers

Use the hex wrench in the bottom socket to manually turn the flywheel if it is jammed

Restore power and test the disposal briefly

If it hums but does not spin, turn off power again and clear the jam

If the disposal leaks, tighten the mounting ring, drain connections, or replace worn seals

If the disposal does not turn on, check the outlet, breaker, wall switch, and reset button

If the motor is burned out or the unit is cracked, replace the disposal

Call a licensed plumber or electrician if the problem persists
