Attach the reel to the rod
Open the bail on a spinning reel or prepare the spool on a baitcasting reel
Run the line through the rod guides
Tie the line to the spool with an arbor knot
Close the bail on a spinning reel
Hold the line with light tension
Turn the reel handle to begin spooling
Keep the line coming off the supply spool in the same direction as it goes onto the reel
Stop occasionally to check for twists and line lay
Fill the spool to about 1/8 inch below the rim
Cut the line and secure the end
Test the line for smooth casting and adjust if needed
