Sit upright and lean slightly forward
Pinch the soft part of your nose just below the bridge
Hold the pinch continuously for 10 to 15 minutes
Breathe through your mouth
Spit out any blood that goes into your mouth
Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the bridge of your nose
Avoid tilting your head back
Avoid blowing, picking, or rubbing your nose
Keep pinching for another 10 to 15 minutes if bleeding continues
Rest quietly after the bleeding stops
Use a saline spray or humidifier later to prevent dryness
Seek medical help if bleeding is heavy, lasts more than 20 minutes, or happens after an injury
