Drink small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution
Avoid solid food for a few hours if needed
Eat bland foods when you can tolerate food: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast
Avoid dairy, greasy foods, spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine
Take loperamide only if you are an adult and do not have fever or blood in the stool
Take bismuth subsalicylate if appropriate for you and you are not allergic to aspirin
Rest and stay hydrated
Wash hands often to prevent spreading infection
Seek urgent medical care if you have blood in the stool, high fever, severe pain, signs of dehydration, or diarrhea lasting more than 2 days
