Get inside the nearest sturdy building immediately
Go to the basement or the lowest, most central room
Stay away from windows, doors, and exterior walls
Drop and cover your head if you are outside when the blast occurs
If you are in a vehicle, stop and get into a building as soon as possible
Remove outer clothing if you may have been exposed to fallout
Seal clothing in a plastic bag if available
Wash exposed skin and hair with soap and water
Do not use conditioner on hair
Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth if you must move through dust
Stay indoors and keep windows and vents closed
Turn off fans, air conditioners, and heating systems that bring in outside air
Move to the center of the building and stay low
Listen for official emergency alerts on battery-powered or hand-crank radio
Follow instructions from emergency officials
Do not go outside for the first 24 hours unless told to evacuate
Stay sheltered longer if officials say fallout is still dangerous
Use stored food and water if available
Drink sealed bottled water or water from protected containers
Avoid food or water exposed to dust or fallout
If you must evacuate, take only essential supplies
Wear long clothing, gloves, and a mask if leaving shelter
Avoid touching dust or debris
Return only when authorities say it is safe
Seek medical help for burns, injuries, or radiation exposure symptoms
