How to Tell if a Puppy Has a Fever?

Check for a rectal temperature of 101.0–102.5°F

Suspect fever if the temperature is 103°F or higher

Suspect a serious fever if the temperature is 104°F or higher

Feel for a warm, dry nose

Look for lethargy or unusual tiredness

Watch for loss of appetite

Notice shivering or trembling

Check for red or glassy eyes

Look for panting when not hot or active

Watch for coughing, vomiting, or diarrhea

Check for weakness or reluctance to move

Look for signs of dehydration such as dry gums

Contact a veterinarian if fever is suspected

Seek urgent veterinary care if the puppy is very young, weak, or has a high fever
