Withhold food for 12 to 24 hours if your dog is an adult and otherwise healthy
Provide small amounts of fresh water frequently
Offer an oral rehydration solution only if approved by a veterinarian
Feed a bland diet in small portions once vomiting has stopped
Use boiled chicken and plain white rice, or plain canned pumpkin if recommended by a veterinarian
Return to the regular diet gradually over 2 to 3 days
Keep your dog away from garbage, spoiled food, and foreign objects
Stop giving any new treats, chews, or table scraps
Monitor for blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy, fever, or dehydration
Contact a veterinarian if diarrhea lasts more than 24 to 48 hours
Seek immediate veterinary care if your dog is a puppy, senior, or has other health problems
Seek immediate veterinary care if there is black stool, large amounts of blood, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, or collapse
Give medications only if prescribed by a veterinarian
Bring a stool sample to the veterinarian if requested
